Department of Pathology

History

The faculty of pathology in Inje university school of Medicine was established in March of 1979 by inaugurating professor Sook Hee Hong as the head of the department pathology in Busan Paik hospital, coincident with the opening of the school of medicine. At that time, Professor Il Hyang Ko was working as the head of the department of pathology in Seoul Paik hospital. In 1981, the first lecture of pathology was given and professors in the department of pathology in Seoul National University College of Medicine as well as professor Moon Ho Yang of Kyung Hee university school of Medicine gave big contributions for the preparations of the lectures and the laboratory practices.
In 1980, professor Jong-Eun Joo and in 1983, professor In Sook Lim finished the training resident course in Seoul Paik hospital and they became part of the faculty of pathology. In 1982, resident training began in the department of pathology of Pusan Paik hospital. In fall of the year 1983, the faculty of pathology was set as a part of basic medical science with inauguration of professor Dong soo Suk from United States of America, as a professor of pathology in the Inje medical university. In 1992, with the mandatory retirement of professor Dong soo Suk, professor Jong-Eun Joo became the head of pathology faculty and contributed for many developments. In 1993, professor Shin Kwang Khang adjourned from Seoul to Busan Paik hospital and took over the charge, followed by professor Hye-Kyoung Yoon in 1995, who systemically established the faculty of pathology. In 2006, chief of the faculty changed to professor Chan Hwan Kim and since the second semester of 2007 until now, professor Young-il Yang is in charge of the head of pathology faculty.
Unlike the staffs of the other basic medical science departments, pathology department staffs take roles as not only professors of the basic medical science but also as diagnostic medical doctors in the hospital. Therefore, the staffs in the five Paik hospitals of the Inje foundation, work as diagnostic medical doctors as well as educating teachers as professors of the faculty of pathology.
